Mihkel Aksalu moves to Sheffield United

01/02/2010 - English Championship outfit Sheffield United have completed the signing of Estonian international goalkeeper Mihkel Aksalu.

The 25-year-old, who has agreed a two-and-a-half year deal, moves from FC Flora Tallinn for a nominal fee.

“I am delighted about the deal. I earned a contract after my first trial which I consider a great achievement,” said Aksalu. “I came to England to help my new club back to Premier League.”

He has spent time with goalkeeping coach Andy Leaning during a number of trial spells at the Shirecliffe training facilities over the past two months, and is now looking forward to making competition to other two goalkeepers Mark Bunn and Ian Bennett.

United’s manager Kevin Blackwell says: "He has proved to be one of the best goalkeepers we have seen for a long time. It is a terrific opportunity for him and if he continues his development he will become the number one Estonian goalkeeper. We are hoping he can fulfil his undoubted potential with Sheffield United and secure his international career."

The 194 cm tall keeper is a full Estonian international with six caps so far after coming through the U-21s ranks. He will wear United’s number 30 shirt. Aksalu is the second Estonian to play in England. The first was legendary goalkeeper Mart Poom who played for Portsmouth, Derby County, Sunderland, Arsenal and Watford.
