Liepajas Metalurgs is out of the Commonwealth Cup in Moscow

20/01/2010 - Today Latvian champion Liepajas Metalurgs has had their last game of the group stage of the Commonwealth Cup in Moscow. Rudiger Abramchik’s team played against Dordoi-Dinamo from Kirgizstan, team which lost both their previous games in the tournament.

Metalurgs was dominating almost throughout the entire game but unluckily conceded a goal in the closing minutes of the game.
In the first half Metalurgs opened the scoring with a newcomer’s Jurgis Kalns strike. After a long attack Grebis gave a ball to Rakel, whose cross was ideal for Kalns to convert it into a goal. It was an even game after that but a hope for progressing to the quarter-finals died a few minutes before the final whistle. With just seven minutes to go Dordoi-Dinamo player Knjazev made a good pass to Mysikov, whose strike from the edge of the Metalurgs’ penalty area was good enough to outplay the keeper Spole.
Interestingly, Aleksandr Mysikov, who scored the equaliser, spent his last two seasons playing for other Latvian side – FK Ventspils. He was well known to most of Metalurgs players as they played against him in Latvian LMT Virsliga, however, it didn’t help them to stop Mysikov from kicking them out from the Cup. This draw against Dordoi-Dinamo saw the Latvian side out of the tournament, while Rubin Kazan and Dnepr from Belarus made it through to the play-offs.

Metalurg – Dordoi-Dinamo - 1:1 (1:0)
Metalurgs: Spole, Kuznecov, Tomašauskas, Kļava, Jemelin, Zirnis, Rafaļskis, Aleksejev (Kalniņš, 78), Kalns, Rakel, Grebis (Kameš, 56).
Goals: 1:0 Kalns (23), 1:1 Mysikov (83).

Final standings: Rubin – 6 (3), Dnepr – 6 (3), Metalurgs – 4 (3), Dordoi-Dinamo – 1 (3).
